JOIN US

The Morro Bay Book Discussion Group is a free program made up of a community of readers and students of life interested in learning and exploring, who come together to discuss books. If you like the idea of discussing books you have just read or just want to learn more about a book before you read it, this is the place to be. Come to any or all sessions!

Most 4th Wednesdays beginning at 10:00 a.m. we will show a movie and spend time discussing it afterwards. We hope those of you who love joining us each Wednesday to discuss a good book, will also enjoy the idea of watching a good film and discussing it with others as well!

Wednesdays from 10:00 a.m. – Noon

Each 1st & 3rd Wednesday participants will have a chance to read and discuss anything from the latest bestsellers, classics, traditional literature, and historical fiction, mysteries or non-fiction books. Join us in animated and thoughtful discussion as we explore a variety of diverse and interesting books.

Each 2nd Wednesday (“Special Topics” day) we will discuss books that make us think! The expectation is not that you will read the book cover to cover (although you are certainly encouraged to), but that you will consider the essence of the message of the book and be ready to discuss that message.

February 22nd – “El Amor brujo” (100 minutes) – Spanish with English subtitles

A modern take on composer Manuel de Falla's gypsy ballet, dressed up in pink sunsets and hellishly red fires. Set in a dusty Andalusian village, El amor brujo (Love the Magician) is a seductive melodrama of a man whose beloved is haunted by the ghost of another. Breathtaking visuals and stunning choreography highlight director Carlos Saura's third dance film with this tory of gypsy lovers who resort to sorcery to eliminate the ghostly presence of the woman's dead husband.

Monsieur Ladmiral, an aging impressionist painter, spends his usual Sunday afternoon visit with his family ruminating over life's small pleasures and inevitable disappointments until his daughter Irene arrives. Irene, a whirlwind of activity for whom life itself is an art, has a magical reviving effect on her father and the world suddenly takes on the beautiful hues and feelings of an Impressionist masterpiece.

April 25th – “Protektor” (102 min) – Czech with English subtitles

This fateful love story is set in Prague during the late 1930s and subsequent Nazi occupation. When the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia is established, Hana's career is cut short and Emil's radio station put under German control. Emil chooses to collaborate with the occupiers in order to survive and protect his wife. Ironically, this choice threatens to destroy the very thing he's trying to protect: Hana.
